A Little Water A Little Light

The story

It was a Saturday, light on the lake, my ridgeback at my feet, and I wasn't quite right. A young woman came out, no stage at all, and set down water for my dog as if it meant nothing. It hit me like a bell in a hall. She probably doesn't remember a man with a big dog and tired eyes. Small kindness is never small to the one who receives it.

🎶 LYRICS

It was a Saturday, light on the lake
City was humming, but my soul took a break
Ridgeback at my feet, old love on my right
We weren’t fighting, but we weren’t quite right

Ordered two beers, let the silence unfold
Eyes scanning faces, young, laughing, bold
Then you walked out, soft step, no stage
Just a girl with a smile, and a quiet kind of rage

And you brought him water, like it meant nothing at all
But that ripple hit me like a bell in a hall
Your tattoos dancing, your eyes in the sun
For a moment, I swear — I was twenty-one

A little water, a little light
You didn’t know, but you saved my night
Not a word, not a fight
Just a little water… and a little light

My past near, but she’s not my wife
We orbit each other in a past-life life
The beer in my hand, the salt on my skin
I felt the world whisper, “You can begin”

And there you were, just part of the day
But something in me wanted to stay
Not to own, not to chase
But to breathe again — at my own pace

You brought him water, then walked away slow
But the world cracked open where your shadow would go
Your smile held sun, your presence held grace
Like the city itself had turned toward my face

A little water, a little light
You didn’t know, but you made it right
Not a word, not a fight
Just a little water… and a little light

You probably don’t remember me.
I was just a man with a big dog and tired eyes.
But you… you looked at me like the world was still good.
And that? That’s the kind of thing I write songs about.
Thank you. Just… thank you.

I’ve lived a hundred lives in a single skin
Burned down the past just to begin
But no fire ever gave me such peace
As the way your kindness set me free

You brought him water, no trumpet, no light
But the sky got warmer, and my chest felt right
No promises, just that smile in flight
Just a little water… and a little light
