The Papermill
The story
I sat outside a café where glass meets rusted stone, a new mall built inside an old paper mill, its chimney still standing. A cold breeze came, and an old man in a worn coat sat beside me and spoke of ink and paper dust and brothers lost. When I blinked there was only steam above my cup. But he had handed me what I'd dropped: know what's worth keeping, know what to release. Sometimes you find tomorrow in a long forgotten place.
Lyrics
A storytelling ballad in minor key | Kenny Rogers meets Leonard Cohen × José González I sat outside the café, Where glass meets rusted stone. The mall was new, the air was warm, But I didn’t feel alone. The chimney rose behind the shops, Old bricks against the steel. A paper mill from yesterday — Still standing. Still real. Then came a breeze that chilled my skin, Though sunlight brushed my face. I turned, and there he sat beside — A man out of time and place. His coat was worn, his eyes were ash, His voice a distant hum. He said, “You’re not the only soul Who came here feeling numb.” “You’ve got to know what’s worth keeping, Know what to release. Know some rules don’t break you — They just hold you into peace. The past don’t mean surrender, But the future ain’t the race. Sometimes you find tomorrow In a long forgotten place.” He spoke of ink and paper dust, Of morning shifts and fire drills. Of brothers lost and stories kept Inside these silent hills. “This mall you see? It used to breathe. With men and sweat and pride. Now ghosts like me just sit and wait To speak when hearts are wide.” I blinked again — he disappeared. Just steam above my cup. But something in my chest had stirred, And something had stood up. “You’ve got to know what’s worth keeping, Know what to release. Know some rules don’t break you — They just hold you into peace. The past don’t mean surrender, But the future ain’t the race. Sometimes you find tomorrow In a long forgotten place.” “The bricks remember names you’ve lost… And some ghosts just wait… To hand you what you’ve dropped.” 🌕 Listen. Remember. Feel.
